Hunts too strong

Royston under 15s visited a strong Huntingdon u15 side in the first round of the Cambs cup for 23/24 season. It has been a difficult start to the season for the u15s blending losing some players with picking up some new players. Having been promoted last season the opposition are much stronger this season but there are signs of the team starting to gel and training is going well so we hope for some results soon!

Royston started this game strongly with the pick and go rucking game drawing in the huntingdon defence before the ball was shipped wide for flying wingers Ben Lambie and James Griffin. Tight forwards Freddie Pine and Oliver Tallis were getting through some heavy work early on.
Roystons scrummage had their best day of the year so far, always getting forward momentum and winning some ball against the head. Admire Chisanu , Charlie Barrett and Ben Green proving to be an imposing front row. Rucking was much improved this week with Owen Sullivan and Sam Dawson dominating the contact area early on. Number 8 Laurence Kelly was always a threat off the back of the scrum.

The strength of the forwards was shown for a first try by Admire Chisanu, making his cup debut for the crows, the coaching team were delighted for a new player to get his name on the scoresheet.

Also crossing the whitewash was Max Davis-Roach who has been Royston's main attacking threat this season, with a series of mazy, elegant runs. The first half was tight with both teams keeping a heavy forward game, as Hunts drew in the royston defence to create space for their exceptional back line.

In the second half Royston were unable to register anymore scores as Huntingdon ran riot - their exceptional back line with strong runners breaking through regularly. Having held the home team to 19-14 at half time Royston hoped to be in the game but the second half was a difficult watch for the coaching team. Despite this, there were plenty of positives and the team are improving every week. The team have a strong kick chase game. Flanker Owen Sullivan, Centre George Arnott and Fly half Jake Boyle all had good games.

The final score of 53-14 was unfair on Royston, a hard lesson that rugby is a tough sport and even in a closely contested game every score matters. Strong Flanker Owen Sullivan was voted player of the match by the opposition.
