Royston Second XV made a short journey south to face local rivals Stevenage II’s for their final match before Christmas. Weather conditions grew gradually worse as the sides warmed up with a rain settling in, providing challenging playing conditions.
Royston looked to make an impact on the game early on, making driving attacks against the Stevenage line, it was not long before Joe Butcher crashed across the line, giving Royston a 5-point lead. From the re-start, Royston once again went on the attack, using the dominant pushing power of their pack to get good position and quick hands to put Jamie Garrett in space and in for a try. Towards the end of the first half, the Crows were given another chance, with a huge drive in the scrum, a push for the line and the ball being shipped wide, Callum Waring bounded in for a try.
The second half started with a determined attack from Stevenage, as they battered the Royston defences time and again. The Crows defended well and after pushing back several surges, counter-attacked, once again using a combination of pacey backs and powerful forward to come close to the line, allowing Mike Robertson to snipe a try from the back of a ruck. Stevenage again put together attacks, and looked close to scoring numerous times, however Callum Waring once again showed great flair, scoring under the posts after making decent ground and blindsiding those who stood in his way with deft footwork and a well sold dummy. Royston walked away with a 25-0 victory, rebalancing the defeat earlier in the season, and giving the Crows a chance to push for promotion after Christmas.
