Royston 2nd XV played their first home game of the season, hosting Hertford at the Heath. Hertford were clinical from kick off, working their way up the pitch before deftly opening up the Royston defensive line. A couple of early tries filled the visitors full of confidence, and saw the score creeping up. Royston defended with vigour but Hertford worked patiently, using the huge boot of their fly half to gain back any ground they lost. Each time Royston came close to scoring, simple mistakes were made, that saw the ball back in Hertford’s hands.
Hertford were certainly the stronger side with their scrum half and fly half dominating the game, Royston were able to hold their own in set pieces, winning a number of Hertford line outs and even turning over a few scrums. It was Herford’s technical experience and well-practiced play making that proved the defining factor, giving them a 43-point victory.
