U14’s complete 100% win record in the league with victory against Cheshunt
By Steve Floyd
Very windy conditions led to a hard-fought tactical battle
The final league game of the season against Cheshun. Our matches have very close every season we were not expecting an easy ride and we were right.
Royston won the toss and made an excellent start playing into the very strong wind; it was clear from the start that this was going to a tough battle. Royston kept the ball in hand and some hard yards earned by the forwards gave the backs a chance to test the Cheshunt defence. Cheshunt scored first but the teams went into half time with one try a piece - Royston’s score from a quality individual try from George Greenwood who exploited a small space on a blindside to sprint up the line and score in the corner.
Royston played very smart rugby in the second half playing with the wind, using the boot to great affect and pushing Cheshunt back into their own half whenever it looked like they were threatening our try line. Once in the Cheshunt half we changed tactics and played with ball in hand making some very powerful runs at the stubborn Cheshunt defence. The pressure finally told with Owen Floyd crashing over from short range.
The game was a tough physical battle and the strangle hold Royston had on the game stopped Cheshunt making any kind of impression and their frustration was apparent in the final few minutes.
With the league finished Royston turn their attention to a semi-final cup game against Tabbard next Sunday at the Heath.
Tries : George, Owen
Penalties : Luke Saltmarsh (2)
