End of season conditions at Shelford
By Steve Floyd
A game that went to the wire
Royston travelled to Shelford for a friendly game.
Shelford fielded a very strong team and it was clear from the outset that they would test our forwards with some strong runners and fierce tackling. Shelford made some excellent early territory with their forwards providing possession to their very fast backline.
A slow start by Royston allowed Shelford to take an early advantage, however, slowly but surely Royston started to play their own game going through the phases and the backs ran some excellent moves to test the Shelford defence. Each side scored two tries in the first half with Shelford able to convert one of theirs.
The game was tight throughout with neither team gaining ascendency - blitz defence from both sides forced lots of errors with no points scored at all in the second half. Despite Royston pressing hard in the last few minutes Shelford hung on for the 2 point win.
