Herts Plate Winners 2019
By Steve Floyd
A hard-fought win as Royston U14's battling spirit results in lifting the Plate to do the double!
Royston travelled to Hertford RFC on Sunday for the cup final against Cheshunt. We expected a tough game after the tight pool match against Cheshunt last month.
Our pre-game warm up went well with both forwards and backs looking sharp; as we approached kick off all the coaches felt confident that Royston would perform to their usual high standard. As it turned out, the first quarter of the game was probably the most stressful to watch all season!
For twenty minutes Cheshunt showed that they were determined to reverse the earlier defeat in the league and played out of their skins. Royston were unable to get out of their own 22 and went 12 - 0 down to two early Cheshunt tries and one conversion - with a yellow card to add to our woes. However, despite the early dominance of Cheshunt our boys did not let the pressure tell. We went in at the break 12 - 7 thanks to a try from Rory and Luke’s conversion.
Royston started the second half with 14 on the field but settled into their own game from the kick-off, putting together phases of play that tested a Cheshunt defence that had little to do in the first quarter. The main battle was upfront and the whole pack deserves huge credit for digging in and serving quick ball to the backs. Three second half tries from Matthew, a further try from Rory and an unbreachable defence resulted in a final score that better reflects what Royston U14's are capable of and thrilled coaches and spectators alike!
All coaches are very proud of what was truly a complete team performance. This piece of silverware is no more than the boys deserve after an amazing 2018-19 season.
