True grit at Saffron Walden
By Steve Floyd
A strong defence and some clinical finishing gave Royston an excellent win
Royston ground out an impressive win on Sunday which spoke volumes for the boys’ determination and resilience; Saffron Walden are a very good side with some impressive wins this season. They were able to frustrate our attempts to score at first, however, our pressure told and a penalty conversion from Cody allowed us to get the first points on the scoreboard.
Ben Smith’s defensive performance at #8 was noted; he made some hard yards from the base of the scrum and from around rucks and mauls. Josh Petit stepped up and gave an excellent performance in the front row and battled hard at scrum time. Cody tackled hard and Ashton & Sammy were an excellent 4/5 partnership.
Toby had a strong game and showed determination in making the line to score our first try under the posts getting Royston on the front foot for the rest of the game.
A second half try from Owen came as a result of the forwards making hard yards for 5 or 6 phases and when the ball went wide he forced over for an excellent try; he remained a potent attack threat all afternoon. Max Gage was on the end of some excellent support play to score in the corner to secure the victory. Joseph & Luke deputised well at 10 and kept the game flowing well. Max Fleming made a welcome comeback and was solid under high balls and made some excellent runs with ball in hand. Ben Perryman made some excellent breaks at #11 and showed the speed that has troubled defences this season.
Saffron Walden were never going to make it easy for us and they battled to the very end and a late try made it a nail biting last few minutes for the coaches & family watching from the touchline.
Hardest fought win of the season. Well done boys!
