Cambs Sixes

What a glorious English autumn day – not. Throughout the morning it was wet and at times the rain was almost horizontal but credit to the 17 players on the day as they got on with it.

Our first game was against a strong Cambridge and throughout the game they did have the upper hand. As the game progressed the players started to get their game heads on and put some pressure on Cambridge. Josh W and George unfortunately did not get the bragging rights against some of their school friends. Some of our usual intensity was not evident in this game.

Our second game was against Saffron Walden. In this game the team put more pressure on the opposition and were a lot more forceful at ruck time. We came out ahead in this game with some lovely tries being scored. Special thanks to Leo, Max F, Owen and Daniel for volunteering to play a half for Saffron Walden – clear evidence of how our players foster the spirit of the game showing it is not about the end result.

Our final back to back game was against a good Shelford side. By this stage the wet and cold had truly set in with it being very cold for some if not all the players. They continued to apply themselves wholeheartedly with some really good opportunities that unfortunately we did not capitalise on. Our rucking and tackling was better and more forceful.

A big thank you to the parents who braved the conditions to watch – the players very much appreciated this. Thanks to the players who continued to try their best throughout the day in trying conditions with a very slippery ball.

This was a new friendly festival added to the list and was well supported by the clubs around Cambridge. The spirit was good and some good rugby was played by all. We do meet up with the clubs we played again in the season, this time we hope for more favourable conditions.
