Royston hosted Wasps on a sunny Saturday afternoon on the Heath

Things started well for the home side with the backs running rampage when given clean ball by the back row, and employing a clever kicking game through half backs Pow and Cotterill

Good field position from one deep kick led to Joe Butcher stealing a Wasps throw in a line out. Given the chance the Royston pack drove hard and the end result was Max Finney being driven over with Will Dacey converting,

The second try was straight off the training pitch. From a solid scrum, decent lines were run keeping the defenders fixed. This pulled a reasonable size hole in the Wasps defence which Ritsema exploited and dotted down a five pointer, which Dacey failed to convert.

Wasps then got a foothold and started to get their big ball carrying forwards involved. Royston defended with heart and gusto but after a consistent ten minutes of pressure a defender stepped offside and Wasps took the 3 points on offer. Half time 12-3

The second half started perfectly for Royston. A deep kick was fielded by Dacey and Royston exploited the dog-legged defence and executed numerous two-on-ones up the length of the pitch, with Dacey taking the ball back with just the full back to beat. With supporting players either side of him he selflessly passed inside to Cotterill who scored unopposed under the posts for man of the match Dacey to convert to make it 19-3.

Royston then lost Prop Olly Brooke and in losing him lost a lot of power in the scrum. Wasps got the upper hand and started to pick Royston's pack apart. Wasps drove and drove and sensibly choose scrums at penalty options to punish Royston's pack. Wasps pulled off a back row move to score a try with 5 minutes to go which they converted to make it 19-10. They then slotted a penalty as discipline started to slip in the Royston ranks for 19-13. With the last play of the game Wasps drove from another scrum. Royston repelled the initial onslaught but quick second phase put a Wasp in for a try. At 19-18, tempers frayed and Royston and Wasps both had a player sent from the field for unnecessary fighting. With just the conversion to go the pressure was on the Wasps kicker. The Royston crowd silenced out of respect and the players flew off the try line to try to block the kick. Unfortunately for the lively Wasps fly half the ball drifted wide for Royston to win 19-18. The first players to the fly half were Royston players to commiserate him and then celebrate their continued unbeaten run.
