Crows March On

Royston 1st XV took to the field once again, facing off against Thetford in the London & South East Junior Vase competition. Royston were hoping to bounce back after their league defeat the previous week. The cold weather meant that many games in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire were cancelled due to a hard pitch, however The Heath facilities prevailed, allowing the game to go ahead.

The game started at a fast pace, with Royston’s John Brain and Louis Dummett both powering across the line to give the crows the lead. Thetford were not to be deterred and came back with their own try, all within the first 15 minutes of the game. Royston continued their attack but stout defence from the Thetford boys left no change in the score during the rest of the first half. From the start of the second half the Crows continued their attack, with Thetford continually pushing them back. Eventually Royston’s determination prevailed, as Joe Butcher crossed the line, and Will Dacey, finding his rhythm, slotted the conversion. The final whistle saw Royston victorious and through to the quarter finals, humble in victory, the Royston side expressed their respect for Thetford, who fought on until the very end, the win being testament to coach Mick Jones and the Royston chaps hard work.

Next week sees two home games at the Heath, with Royston looking to come away with two solid victories.
